The proposals, which include the demolition of the rear hall and conversion of the front building in Lawn Street, have been submitted to Renfrewshire Council.

The mooted project would also involve the construction of a two-storey extension to allow the overall site to become three units with gardens.

A bid for planning permission and listed building consent has been brought forward by Rankin Architects on behalf of the Kirk Session of Paisley Abbey.

A supporting statement explained: “This application seeks to convert the existing front building into a residential property, remove the existing rear hall and link building and replace with a two-storey extension which will allow the site to become three residential apartments with gardens.

“The proposed scheme comprises of one residential unit on the ground floor and two units on the upper level.

“The small extension footprint allows for a large area of external amenity space which has been divided into three areas by timber fencing providing an area of amenity space for each apartment.”

The document said the building, which dates back to 1893 and is thought to have been designed by Thomas Graham Abercrombie, is “falling into disrepair” and claimed the conversion would “breathe life back into the building”.
