RenSafeOnline Team and Renfrewshire Council have produced top tips on online safety this Christmas, here are the top festive tips:
- Don’t give a fraudster a Christmas present. Treat unexpected emails, texts, phone calls and posts with caution and if in doubt, call the person or organisation they claim to come from, on the number you know to be correct.
- New devices, games and gadgets and time on their hands. It’s great for your kids, but also perfect for scammers. Chat with them about what they’re doing, pass on our online safety advice and choose good parental control software/app.
- Do you share your entire Christmas on social media? Why would you? Think before you post!
- Protect those new or pre-owned phones, tablets & computers with a unique password/passcode and internet security app/software, set them to update and backup automatically, and download apps only from your official app store.
- Christmas is a great time for online gaming, but make sure you and your family are doing it safely including how you set up those new devices.
- Read our tips on setting up those new internet-connected devices like voice assistants, CCTV cameras, appliances and toys for better online safety That includes changing passwords from the factory-set default ones.
