In the first lockdown due to the COVID pandemic, DWP eased their identity checks to allow an increased amount of claims to be processed.
Due to higher rates of fraud and error in claims processed during this time, DWP have announced that they will be reviewing claims made during this time and asking claimants to verify their identity. If the claimant doesn’t verify their identity when asked their benefit payments may be stopped.
If you manage your Universal Credit claim online, DWP will contact you through your online account. If you have a telephone UC claim or claimed ESA or JSA you will be contacted by phone (this will usually be from an 0800 number or a withheld number)
Remember never give out your bank details to someone who calls you. If you are concerned that the call is not genuine ask for them to write to you or advise that you will call them back on a number on the top of a letter you have received from the DWP.
